《Oil Pastels Painting for "Respect Your Cat Day》, by dawnxisoul393art

Mittens was a shy cat who didn't like strangers. When the doorbell rang, she would hide under the bed. Jill, Mittens' owner, wanted to help Mittens become more comfortable around new people. On March 28, Respect Your Cat Day, Jill decided to invite a few friends over to properly introduce them to Mittens.

Jill's friends came over bearing gifts of catnip toys and treats. They sat down on the living room floor and Jill brought Mittens out from under the bed. At first, Mittens was skittish. But Jill's friends were patient and calm, letting Mittens come to them in her own time. They extended their hands slowly, allowing Mittens to sniff them. Within a few minutes, Mittens was rubbing up against them and purring. By the end of the visit, Mittens was playing with her new toys and friends.

Respect Your Cat Day was founded in 2004 to raise awareness about treating cats with kindness, compassion, and patience. Cats are often seen as aloof or uncaring, but they are sensitive animals and need gentle, respectful treatment, especially when meeting new people. With affection and time, any cat can become friendly and social.

Respect Your Cat Day is important because it highlights the need to be thoughtful towards cats and build positive relationships with them based on trust. When people take the time to understand cats on their own terms instead of forcing unwanted interaction, they are rewarded with a loving bond and fellowship.

People celebrate Respect Your Cat Day in many ways. Some use the day to commit to learning more about their cat's body language and sounds to better understand their needs and boundaries. Others shower their cats with extra treats, play, grooming, and belly rubs. Local animal shelters sometimes hold cat yoga or craft events on this day to raise funds and spread awareness about cat adoption and welfare. Most of all, cat guardians and their friends take time to appreciate the joy cats bring to their lives while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes each cat special and unique.

March 28 is Respect Your Cat Day. Here's our painting with oil pastels for this special day, and have a wonderful Respect Your Cat Day, cheers!
