October 8, 2022, "International African Penguin Awareness Day"
The second Saturday in October (October 8 in 2022) is "International African Penguin Awareness Day". The International Penguin Awareness Day began in 2010 to coincide with the annual Penguin Festival in South Africa. The Southern African Coastal Bird Conservation Foundation (SANCCOB) hosted the festival. When we think of penguins, we may think that they all live in cold places, and our brains may show that groups of penguins jump into the ice water. In fact, not all penguins live in cold climates. However, all penguins do live in the southern hemisphere, including African penguins. A distinctive feature of African penguins is their pink glands above their eyes. These glands help keep their bodies cool. African penguins have always kept the same mate. They can live for 15 years in the wild and 25 years in captivity. They grow to 27 inches tall and weigh from 4 to 11 pounds. There are only about 140000 African penguins left. The main threats to their survival include commercial fishing, oil pollution, egg harvesting, and habitat destruction. International African Penguin Awareness Day has raised awareness of the plight of African penguins.
October 8 is World Octopus Day. Many of our impressions of octopuses come from Disney's works. Disney's most famous "octopus" role is "little beauty octopus", a half human half octopus form of a deep-sea witch. Exaggerated high eyebrows, long red nails, and iconic beauty moles are the most fashionable synonyms. In addition to being a witch, "Little Beauty Octopus" is actually a hidden fashion "witch", which we found in the data of New York Fashion Week 2018. We generally believe that octopuses have eight suction cups, which are soft and elastic. But what we don't know is that there is a kind of octopus that is different from ordinary octopuses. These octopuses have a shell at a certain stage of life. Female octopuses of this kind secrete a very thin hatching shell during reproduction and hide their eggs in the shell to protect them. These expectant mothers always protect their shells carefully, especially when swimming. Scientists have found that some female octopus mothers do not even eat for a long time while taking care of their eggs. Such great maternal love is really touching.
The second Saturday in October (October 8, and the second Saturday in October 2022) is the "National Chess Day" of the United States. Chess is a two-player board game in which each player develops strategies and defenses to capture the king. Since the early crusade, chess has been loved by millions of people all over the world. Strategy, thinking, creativity and endless possibilities make chess full of interesting game opportunities. National Chess Day provides an opportunity to celebrate and learn all about the history, challenges, and enjoyment of chess. Chess began many centuries ago. As early as 600 AD, a similar game from India was called chaturanga, which may be the ancestor of chess. This kind of game is likely to be used as a way to promote the strategic training of military personnel. In the United States, in 1976, President Ford announced that October 9 was National Chess Day, which has been adhered to ever since. Since more than 100 countries recognize chess as a sport, National Chess Day is not only a national celebration but also extends to the whole world.
